Book Reviews of Trunk Music (Harry Bosch, No. 5)Book Review: Music Worth a Listen Summary: 5 Stars
There are lots of thrillers on the market but not like this one. This guy can write. Connelly keeps it fast and furious with plot twists and mysteries which hold the reader in thrall right to the end.
The spartan gift shop on our cruise ship to Hawaii had literally no magazines or newspapers. My brother was desperate for reading material and somehow fished out Trunk Music from a flimsy rack of no-name paperbacks. Guess he struck it lucky.
We had loads of fun with the title. My brother thought it described the rattling sound of the hapless victim being tossed around to and fro whereas I surmised it signaled the scream of terror of the poor soul making the horrible discovery.
Best find out for yourself. Harry Bosch will keep you hoppin'.
Book Review: No surprises here! Summary: 2 Stars
Another bad cop killing his lovers spouse with the spouse orchestrating from the sidelines. A plot Connelly has used more than once.
In all, if you look at it stand alone from the others in the series, it is well done. Good characterizations, good dialogue, but well worn plot.
It is readable, however.
Book Review: Not as strong a plot as earlier Bosch storylines Summary: 3 Stars
I've recently started reading Michael Connelly and reading his books in chronological order is the only way to go. Trunk Music features an LAPD homicide detective, Harry Bosch, who was the main character in Connelly's first four books. In the Bosch book preceding this one, The Last Coyote, Connelly left Harry careerless, homeless and loveless. A year and a half has passed since The Last Coyote and Harry is in a much better position. His hillside home has been rebuilt after sustaining earthquake damage and he is back on the homicide table after being on the burglary table since his return from stress leave. In Trunk Music, Harry rekindles a relationship with his romantic interest in Black Ice and you will never believe how that turns out!! Trunk Music's plot wasn't as intricate as the earlier Bosch books and therefore it was pretty easy to figure out whodunit (I like when the author keeps me guessing until the end...that is just me...but that is why I gave the three star rating). Still, all-in-all this was a good read and I've already started Connelly's next book, Blood Work, although I must admit I was disappointed to find it isn't a Harry Bosch novel.
Book Review: Not one of the best but still very enjoyable Summary: 3 Stars
OK let me start by saying this is an enjoyable book and if you're a fan of both Michael Connelly and the Harry Bosch books you will like this. Having said that I will add that the story does run a bit long and as a result it is thin towards the end. I did enjoy the fact that there were several twists and turns you didn't see coming but the end of the novel does seem a bit labored and forced.
This is enjoyable reading and while it's not Bosch's best work it is still a fun and interesting book. If you're a fan of the series you will not be sorry you read it!
Book Review: Perhaps Connell's Best Summary: 5 Stars
I was a private eye for thirty-five years. I'm a published author of thriller novels. In the past year I have read almost everything Connelly has written. I think this is by far his best, most complicated, and most riveting work. It was the first time I actually felt a little thrill at the end. This book held my attention completely.
I had no trouble keeping all the characters identified. The twists and turns and double-backs in this novel were delicious mind-candy. It was almost like being back in harness, working a bad case. Feelings of the Man In Blue breathing down my neck the entire way were like flashbacks I didn't want to have, as harry Bosch risks his career and freedom and life at every bend in the trail.
I LOVED this book. I plan to read it again.
