Book Review: Woodturning yes. Bach no.

I have read some of Richard Raffan's woodturning books and rate his knowledge, experience and authorship. It seemed a good idea to buy a dvd to supplement the library in an effort to improve my turning skills. The dvd takes us through how to sharpen chisels and gouges, movement at the lathe, skew chisel use, gouge manipulation, attaching stock to the lathe, spindle work between centres and bowl turning. Raffan demonstrates his wonderful craftsmanship with an air of authority and well-presented demonstration. Any aspiring woodturner would learn from watching his excellent skills in this video. Sadly there is a down side. At many points in the video, the observer is subject to a loud, intrusive and totally tasteless synthesiser. The performer's rendition of Gavottes 1 and 2 from Bach's Sixth Cello Suite can only be described as an affront on musical taste from any viewpoint. A very good video on woodturning including a perfect demonstration of how not to play Bach.
