Book Reviews of Twelve-Furlong Mile and Other Works of Short FictionBook Review: Twilight Zone Fans Will Love This Book Summary: 5 Stars
I've never felt compelled to write a review before, but after I saw a review posted that said something to the affect that this is the best book you've never read, I decided to add my two cents.
This is one of the best collections of short stories I've ever read, hopefully others will find it. I'm a big Twilight Zone fan and I found the book by browsing Amazon and stumbling on one of the reviews that made a Twilight Zone comparison.
All ten stories in this book are unique and great reads. As the book cover states, the characters are eary to relate to, but they find themselves in unique situations. This is not a sports book, but there are sports backdrops. The relationships and characterization are spot-on. The plot twists and surprise endings are outstanding. Although Twilight Zone fans will love this book, the stories are more human and less science fiction.
The story "End of Latency" should've been a Twilight Zone TV episode forty years ago. It's that good. "Summer Trade" is a baseball story (again not too much about sports) that is also Twilight Zone-esqe. The title story "Twelve-Furlong Mile" and "The Wingman" are very, very good and have excellent male-female relationships. "The Adventures of Dan Wetmeyerbent" is one of the more unique stories I've read.
Reading this book was a treat and left me wanting more.
Book Review: WOW! JUST TERRIFIC! Summary: 5 Stars
TWELVE FURLONG MILE IS...10 GREAT stories...10 unpredictable endings...very enjoyable reading. The stories are clever and imaginative and it was so easy to relate personally with the characters. I'm hoping that Steve Scott has more stories coming soon. I have recommended this book to my friends and have had great feedback from them, as well. Do yourself a great favor and GET THIS BOOK!
Book Review: What a pleasant surprise! Summary: 5 Stars
TWELVE-FURLONG MILE AND OTHER WORKS OF SHORT FICTION was a departure from my usual reading realm and a wise choice of entertaining reading material! What an ability Steve Scott has to captivate ones interest in a short venue with likable, clearly defined characters and some disturbing situations. There's comical bantering, effortless enlightenment of subject matter (i.e. gambling formulas & baseball cards), surprises galore and shock value! My heart was touched and ached for the 8th grader in "The Adventures of Dan Wetmeyerbent". My favorite was the beautifully written "Closing Arguments" which had me feeling I sat on the witness stand, too! Tied for second was: "Wingman", "Ken and the Princess" and "End of Latency". Too outstanding, I couldn't just pick one! I hope Steve Scott is planning on sharing more stories. I want more! more! more!
Book Review: You'll laugh, You'll Connect, You'll Even Get Choked Up Summary: 5 Stars
I have to admit, I bought this book solely off the cover (horse and jockey) and the title (horse racing). Well, it's not a horse racing book. Horse racing, actually the main character betting on horses at a Las Vegas race/sports book, merely serves as the backdrop of the first story. And, the story is terrific! The characters are very real. Any typical guy that has gone to Vegas with a buddy will love the first story, "Twelve Furlong Mile."
And, so it goes for all ten stories in this book. The characters are very easy to relate to. The stories are unique and very clever. As some of the other reviews have stated, this isn't a sports book, but the author is a sportswriter and there's a sports element to each. It's the author's comfort-zone. But, the story is about regular people finding themselves in unique situations.
The book's description is correct in comparing it to Twilight Zone episodes, but I agree with others that it's not a science fiction book, as a Twilight Zone comparison might suggest....and, that's a good thing.
I found myself laughing out loud to "Two Jokers," another story in which guys go on a Vegas jaunt and moved by "The Wingman" and "Ken and the Princess." "Twelve Furlong Mile" and "End of Latency" are terrific.
Again, I mistakenly bought this book thinking it was all horse racing stories, but am very happy I did.
