King plays to his strengths as a storyteller in 'Under the Dome' - a large cast of living, breathing characters thrust into an extreme situation. He's done it before, in 'Salem's Lot' and 'Needful Things' and 'The Mist,' among others. He takes a relatively small, somehow isolated group of people, introduces a supernatural element, and then lets them tear each other apart along lines of weakness that already existed, but are now magnified.
The supernatural element - in this case a massive invisible, impenetrable, almost impermeable Dome of unknown origin that cuts off (literally) a small town in Maine - is just the catalyst. The real story is the social dynamics of the characters in the town and the reaction that results from their sudden isolation. In 'Under the Dome' the population of Chester's Mill runs the gamut: a liberal who served in Iraq, a conservative newspaper owner, a minister questioning her faith, a religious zealot, a smart teenager, a fledgling doctor, a young man with a serious problem, and many more. When the Dome comes down, they all have to find a way to live together...or not. They find that under the Dome, much is different, but much is also the same, and no secrets last long.
Here is where King weaves a complex web of story, interweaving strands like a master. Just as one strand is reaching a climax he moves to the next, leaving us hanging for more even as we discover the new storyline happening elsewhere. They all are brought together, amazingly, in a dramatic and compelling end.
'Under the Dome' is a behemoth of a book, at just under 1100 pages, but worth every moment. A vast, smart, satisfying novel.
