Book Reviews of Undone (Grant County)Book Review: "Serial killers, by definition, were good at their jobs." Summary: 4 Stars
In the prologue of Karin Slaughter's "Undone," Judith and Henry Coldfield have just celebrated their fortieth wedding anniversary. They are thirty minutes away from downtown Atlanta when Henry violently wrenches his steering wheel to avoid hitting an animal. Much to the couple's horror, Henry had not run over a deer, but a woman who had been held captive and is near death. Furthermore, she is not the sole victim of a psychopath who abducts women, imprisons them in an underground chamber, and puts them through unspeakable torture. To solve the case, Slaughter brings back two agents from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Will Smith and Faith Mitchell. In addition, the grieving doctor from the Grant County novels, Sara Linton, has moved to Atlanta, where she works in the emergency room of a public hospital. Sara is still struggling to come to terms with a shocking tragedy that upended her life.
Slaughter rarely holds back, and this time around, the story that she tells is as raw and uncompromising as ever. This tale of a lunatic who targets women of a certain physical type is grisly and unnerving. Fortunately, "Undone" has positive attributes that make it compulsively readable. Agents Trent and Mitchell, both in their thirties, are strongly depicted characters whom Slaughter takes great pains to humanize. Trent is a good cop who has a weakness for his faithless wife. He is also hiding a surprising and (to him) shameful secret. Faith, a fifteen year veteran of the bureau, is the more aggressive of the two. She is unlucky in love and is concealing important information from Will and her boss that may affect her ability to function on the job. Faith and Will respect one another, but their policing styles are radically different. Will is laid back and empathetic, while Faith is fiery and blunt. Although the two often butt heads, their disagreements do not affect their considerable mutual respect and affection. Sadly, the beautiful and senstive Dr. Sara Linton has been "undone" by the losses she has endured. She is slowly beginning to accept what she cannot change and is trying to move on with her life.
This is a frightening and suspenseful thriller in which the reader's heart goes out to the unfortunate people kidnapped by a sadistic fiend. Slaughter takes great pains to demonstrate how destructive the rivalry can be between the GBI (Georgia Bureau of Investigation) and the locals; the two departments constantly bicker and engage in games of one-upmanship. We come to care about Will and Faith, whose messy personal lives take a back seat to their passion for justice. As the detectives follow up dozens of leads and come up empty, we fear that they will not reach the incarcerated women in time. Slaughter has a polished prose style, and is a fine descriptive writer who uses setting effectively. The conclusion is electrifying, with just enough loose ends to prime us for future installments. Readers should be warned that "Undone" contains explicit language as well as graphic depictions of physical and emotional torture inflicted by "someone well practiced in the art of pain."
