Book Review: Alright.

I know the author fought - and recovered from an ED. She dealt with it at the main character's age, so I imagine its somewhat based on herself.
So I try not to be harsh on it.
But - this was the first book - ED book, ED fiction - that I haven't liked.
It seemed detached, I couldn't get INTO the character. Frankly, I kept feeling as though the author had only done copious research on what an eating disorder and its symptoms were like. When I found that the author had indeed been through one, I kep thinking - what happened?? You had the opportunity to turn this story into something powerful, to use your emotions and yourself and make this MEAN something.
To me, it didn't, not really.
No, I lie. Some parts were very powerful. Particularly towards the end.
But for the most part, I felt like I wasn't part of the character, like we had nothing in common - and, insofar as experience and thought/behavior - we really truly do. Which made it bizarre. I was unable to relate to someone as had experience much the same as I had? She had no depth. She never really delved into who she was and why she got this. She more observed the other girls and wrote about them. Which, like I said, made it feel like someone wrote from a textbook.
in character only had little substance to her.
The beginning - fell short. I don't know anyone with an eating disorder whose started so subtly, contradictorily (like how she cringes about the anorexics and thinks they're disgusting, but the very next day wants to be one??), and simply. They are deep disorders.
Or, I could be wrong.
Only my opinion.
In any case - the book was interesting - some parts were novel - I thought it was good to add both the (textbook nonetheless) athlete pressure and the girl whose mother had been anorexic and died. You don't see those much, particularly the last. As the child of a (dying, not dead) anorexic mom - I related to that character more than any other.
The ending - was very good, but at times confusing - I think she did it on purpose though.
So a three. Maybe when I reread it it'll become a four.
Maybe its one as has to be read twice.
