Book Reviews of V for VendettaBook Review: An instant classic Summary: 5 StarsI was not a massive fan of comic books until I read this book. The Plot is told extremely well, and David Lloyd's artwork is superb, it really compliments the story itself and makes it seem almost real. This is the first graphic novel I bought, along with Watchmen, which is even better! I can't wait for the film to come out and i would reccommentd this to anyone who likes reading, full stop. It is a masterpiece and no bookshelf should be without it. BUY IT NOW!!!
Book Review: Compulsory Reading Summary: 5 StarsThe arguments for and against "graphic novels" can take place elsewhere; this review is of a superb NOVEL, end of argument. The vivid creation of Britain in the grip of a fascist dictatorship, being freed by the actions of a Victim of that regime, is in turns horrifying and inspiring. I defy anyone with even the slightest idea of political history to not be affected by this work. I write this 400 years after the execution of the first chap to try V's explosive method of bringing about regime change - and it is only politically correct to use force in other countries now. Or am I getting as paranoid as Adam Susan?
Book Review: a book of two halves? Summary: 4 StarsI beleive that the first part of 'V' was written 5 or so years before the second half. This really shows in the quality of the writing, although the artwork is totally uniform. The first half is amazing: shocking, sad, hilarious, though-provoking, dark and, above all, utterly intreging. By page 150 (or so) i was under the impression i was halfway through the best graphic novel ever written. Unfortunately, it seems with hindsight, I had already finished it. The second half takes a quality nosedive. The writing suddenly goes from wonderfully eccentric to pathetically verbose. With it, the pace slows down considerably and the story meanders inexcusably. It seems that alan moore suddenly no longer knew 'the score'. at all. whereas 'V's monologues started enigmatically, they morph slowly into tiresome non-sensical drivel. The storyline concludes in a reasonably satisfying way, but it does not offer the twists and fireworks suggested by the first few amazing chapters. I give 'V for Vendetta' 4 out of 5 because the first half of the book is so totally essential to read if you love graphic novels. (and if you don't - it could convert you!) It is better than Frank Miller, even at his best. However, whereas Miller is consistantly brilliant, Moore is an erratic genius, and the book simply cannot maintain the brilliance in which it commences. READ IT by all means; it is an experience. But just be ready for a minor, if worthwhile, disappointment.
Book Review: Inspiring and beautiful with a shock of realism! Summary: 5 StarsI read this a few short weeks ago, and no book, film or play has been able to take my mind off 'V for vendetta' for more than a minute!! This book is incredible and had me hooked from the beginning. It is a story of democracy and fear, but it also brings various relationships into focus, such as between V and his accomplice Evey who both go through a tremendous transformation and develop a great love for one another. The harsh reality and fear of living in a totalitarian country is truly brought to life and alan moore really makes you empathise with every character, i would recommend this to anyone!! Love, Hate, Fear, Inspiration...every emotion in your body will be stirred by this tremendous book.
