Book Reviews of Veil of RosesBook Review: A nice love story Summary: 4 StarsEven though the ending was predictable, "Veil of Roses" was an enjoyable read. There were many colorful characters, although I didn't care for trashy Eva.
"Veil of Roses" also lets the reader know a bit about the repression in Iran and makes one appreciate the freedom in America.
Book Review: Finding the Courage to Ask for what you Want Summary: 4 StarsAt first, I thought this would just be a cute, fun read for me - a break from the heady, academic textbooks I normally read. But then I fell in love with the story of this young woman, one that resonates with me and with so many women I know. At different levels, we're all the timid, fearful, shy girl that Tami must be to survive in her old life AND we're all the adventurous, independent, creative beings that she so wants to fully express (or suppress). There's one part of the story I loved in particular; something that I had never really thought of in that way before. At one point, Tami recognized that its not comfort (from someone she loves) that is needed, it is courage. In the past, I so often had been searching for another to comfort me not recognizing the need to find the courage within me, instead. Laura Fitzgerald, thank you for sharing this book with the me!
Book Review: Definitely a fun read Summary: 5 StarsHi everyone, I read a sweet romance title, A Veil of Roses, a debut novel from Bantam books by Laura Fitzgerald.
Veil of Roses
Tamila is a young Iranian woman who comes to America, ostensibly to visit her sister on a ninety-day visa, but in reality she is on a mission
(with help from her sister and brother-in-law,) to find a husband. Not just any husband, but a US citizen. Then she can remain in America. A family requirement is that he be Muslim and preferably Iranian.
This makes for a couple of humorously interesting scenarios. One prospect is a fanatic about cleanliness and hallucinates about bugs, another is a gay man who proposes a sham marriage to please his aging parents.
Walking in Tucson, to her first English class at the U of A she meets a young man she's attracted to and vice versa at one of the ubiquitous Starbucks. He is an American, although "not suitable." Nevertheless, she allows him to remain in her life, though trying to keep their relationship at arms length.
Conclusion
Fitzgerald, a fellow Arizonan, writes in a fresh, light, smooth, easily understandable style. I enjoyed Fitzgerald's comparison of the rigid Iranian society with our own, through the wondrous eyes of our awed visitor and wondered if it was so with all new visitors. It is an interesting way to learn about another culture, through the detailed contrast with our own.
The story is well paced, an easy and fun read. This is the kind of book you'll have trouble putting down and may find yourself reading in one sitting and more than once.
I should probably point out that this is Fitzgerald's debut novel, though, upon reading it you would likely assume she had authored many books. In reviewing this book I would certainly give it a top rating and a hearty recommendation. Two thumbs up!
Book Review: Loved It! Summary: 5 StarsI'm not typically a romance reader, but I loved this book. It is an easy read. Great for curling up in a chair with a warm, cup of coffee and getting lost in the main character Tami. I like how the author gives insight about the character's culture. The book is written from the main character's view of what it is like to be in a strange culture. I would definitely recommend the book. The book is full of hopes and dreams. A great reminder of how we all have hopes and dreams for ourselves, as well as our family. I hope Laura Fitzgerald is working on a sequel or another book already!
Book Review: Fascinating! Summary: 5 StarsI read this in one day because I just couldn't get it out of my mind. The author gives some real insight into how someone new to freedom will be somewhat afraid, totally amazed, then emotionally uplifted when she experiences it. It made me, as an American by birth, appreciate even more the freedoms we have in this country. I was especially entranced with the choices the author made for pictures that Tami took to explain freedom. Imagine seeing sneakers as freedom!
