Book Review: Michelle Phillips - Front and Center!

I remember when this album came out and that, as an eleven year old kid, it was one of my favorites. Michelle Phillips, the only surviving member of the Mamas and the Papas, finally gets her chance to stand out and shine as a solo singer - and it's about time. Although she is now an accomplished actress, mother and grandmother, she will always be remembered as the beautiful, willowly blonde who rose to fame as one-fourth of one of the greatest 60's pop groups of all time. While most people think of her in terms of her looks and the late "Mama" Cass Elliot as the voice behind the sound of the Mamas and Papas sound that is a gross understatement. It is a well documented fact that Michelle and Cass were able to blend their voices to achieve a harmony that has largely been un-paralled by anyone else. Michelle admits that her voice was a "light soprano" but it blended perfectly with Cass's powerful contralto to create "the sound" of the Mamas and the Papas. Because of her softer sound, she basically forced Cass to control her big voice which created a vocal blend with fellow Papas, John Phillips and Denny Doherty, that gave the Mamas and the Papas their distinct sound.
She did have lead vocals on a few of the groups hits - most memorably on their smash hit "Dedicated to the One I Love". That is what makes her long overdue 1977 solo venture, "Victim of Romance" such a welcome treat. She uses her light soprano to it's fullest capacity. "Achin' Kind" which was released as a single has a country-rock feel to it and it is definitely autobiographical for Michelle if you listen to all the lyrics. But the song that really captures the power of her voice is "No Love Today" which should have been a single. This is a very enjoyable album from one of pop music's most under-rated singers - I thoroughly recommend it!
