Book Reviews of Vietnam: A History

Book Review: Too much Washington nonsense
Summary: 3 Stars

There's a lot of interesting material in this book, but the narrow focus on the political machinations in Washington at the expense of the actual war quickly becomes tiresome. The coverage of the actual war on the ground is very thin. Also the author's support for the Vietcong and North Vietnam becomes irritating pretty quickly. I mean, sure the Americans and French did some stupid things and acted brutally on numerous occasions, but the Communist regime was and is incredibly repressive and violent towards its own people. The author's ideological blinders allow him to repeatedly brush this off.

Book Review: Truly superb. A must read book.
Summary: 5 Stars

More of a political and historical book than a war book. It is still the best book on Vietnam that Ive ever read.

Book Review: VIETNAM: A HISTORY
Summary: 5 Stars

It took me almost a year to get through this book, but I finally did finish it. I think the only assiumption a vet like myself can arrive at at this book's conclusion, is BOY, DID WE LOSE THAT WAR!!! There is no other way to perceive this ending. They really did us beat us, in every way possible. Many who do not know much about the Vietnam War (in depth) think--to this day--there is still is something we could have done to win the thing. My experience as a UH-1D helicopter pilot with the Outlaws in the Mekong Delta in 1966-67 educated me for a year that could not have been accomplished in any other way. You had to be in-country to learn! Any vet that has been pursuing knowledge of his tour of duty needs to read this book; it should be on your bookshelf!

Book Review: Very holistic and heavy stuff about decission making
Summary: 5 Stars

During the years I've read lots of Vietnam books. Especially my inters has been ; how did the vise men of USA enter this ill fated, astronomically expensive (by all standarts) war. Karnow`s book is the best so far even though it's hard and heavy to go thru. Not a war book. Has given me lot's of thinking as an business executive. It seems that very big decissions are made a) with very little knowledge or b) by "the end justifies the means" c) both. In war, politics and business. Tapio Makelainen Vice-President. M.Sc. Helsinki, Finland

Book Review: Vietnam: A History
Summary: 4 Stars

The late Stanley Karnow, while writing for American audiences, provides an authoritative history of one of the most divided periods of our times. A must for any student or participant of the the period.
