Book Reviews of Violet & Claire

Book Review: ...a happy ending!
Summary: 5 Stars

I love Francesca Lia Block's novels, and I found this to be one of her best. The main characters, Violet and Claire are best friends, but complete opposites! Violet is a dark, mysterious, chic girl who is into film, while Claire is a naive, glittery cute fairy chick. Anyways, to make a long story short, their friendship is nearly torn apart by changes in their lifestyles, but the happy ending is comforting. Go out and buy this novel if you are looking for a poetic, modern, magical experience!!

Book Review: :)
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm in middle school and just finished reading a advance copy of the book (it is older) I thought it was a great book and recomend it to everyone. If you like this book "Breathing Underwater", and "Violet & Claire" you should read too!

Book Review: A beautiful, heartwarming tale of love and friendship...
Summary: 5 Stars

Immediately after finishing Block's Echo, I picked up Violet and Claire in hopes of enjoying it as much as I had the former. I must admit that, at first, I found it to lack the depth, quality, and beauty of Echo... while there are certain qualities of Violet's character that I adore and relate to, her lack of maturity and thoughtfulness irritates me at times. I found her, at first, to be too controlling, demanding, and arrogant. However, of course - as with any good book - I believe that she grows into a stronger, more beautiful, and mature young woman as the story progresses. I still much prefer the viewpoint of the lovely, thoughtful, and soft-spoken Claire... perhaps because I can relate to her character more. She uses her love for fantasy and poetry as a means of escape from her emptiness, heartache, and pain. Initially, I found the relationship between Violet and Claire to be a bit shallow, but when I thought about it, it did, afterall, make sense: They were both desperate for friendship, love, attention, and acceptance, and they found it in each other, and each filled the void inside the other. Though I was doubtful at times during the book as to whether I wanted to complete it or not, by the end, I knew that it was a truly beautiful story of friendship and love that I would not mind reading again. The relationship between Violet and Claire is heartwarming, believable, and beautiful...

Book Review: A poetic & beautiful tale of friendship
Summary: 5 Stars

Two girls; one dark, one light, different as can be, yet together make the perfect image of a teenage girl.

Violet is an aspiring goth-dressed film-maker with a deep adoration for movies, directing, acting, and film. Violet used to call herself 'Vile' when she used to be suicidal, and now she says that movies literally saved her life.

Claire is a soft-spoken, sweet and ethereal girl living in a trailer park with her single, depressed mom. Claire tries to escape reality by dreaming of a race of faeries and writing poetry to escpae the darkness that surrounds her every single day.

On the outside, they're as different as can be. They meet one day in the school yard when Violet spots Claire and decides that she is the starlet for her movie she wants to create, and calls her "Tink". Violet drives away some guys who are picking on Claire, and soon they become friends.

Cut to English class. Violet gazing at the teacher. 'What was Lady Macbeth's fatal flaw?' her teacher waa-waas (as in Charlie Brown, the adults on on another level as kids and therefore waa-waa, and don't speak normally) 'Ambition' is the answer. Violet soon comes into contact with a filming agency exec and is offered a job. As Violet gets drawn into the world of high-powered Hollywood movie industry, her ambition and drive to succeed lead her astray from her budding friendship with Claire, and into the dangerous world of money, sex and drugs.

Claire herself is finding new things in her life to occupy her, as well. In a coffee shop, Claire finds an ad in a paper advertising a 'poetry for screenwriters' seminar, and Claire finds herself drawn to the man in the ad. She drags Violet along with her, and soon meets Peter Brookman, a sensitive poet not unlike Claire, who leads the class. She finds herself deeply inspired and also, falling in love.

Drawn into different worlds, all these factors threaten to rip this photo-negative friendship apart, threatening to 'fade into black' forever, one thing alone in the world is strong enough to make two halves whole again.

Book Review: A tale of friendship
Summary: 5 Stars

This book tells of the eccentric friendship between Violet, a budding screenwriter, and Claire, a girl who believes she is a Faerie. They're planning on writing a movie based on their lives, but it turns into anything but...and their life is more like the movie. They put their friendship on the line, but learn that they're best friends forever and need each other to survive.

This book is a great reminder of the best things about friendship. It can remind you why you are so in tune with your best friend. I recommend this to everyone.

It's not your average fairy tale. :)
