Book Review: Violet & Claire, an adult's perspective
Summary: 3 Stars

I had to read this book for an adolsecent literature class assignment. Overall, I was disappointed with the quality of the book. The storyline was stale and the characters and setting cliche. Violet is the "poor, misunderstood little rich girl" and Claire...well, I haven't quite figured her out because of the lack of character development. Also, while sex and drugs are definitely choices out there for teenagers, the characters in the book partake of them quite freely and with no serious consequences. Violet is an adult character, very mature, and prone to making bad choices. Claire is some lost, waif-like soul. It's just a bizarre combination that doesn't work without a little more storyline and character development.

I read other reviews of this book, and they are complimentary. I can see where the book would be an interesting and easy read for adolescent girls. In that sense, if any book can get kids to read, then I'm all for it. I just wouldn't use it in my classroom or recommend it to my students. To be completely honest, I was surprised that adolescents like this book because they usually are more critical of books than I am. Kids seem to see inconsistencies more quickly and see through weak characters more clearly.

Overall, yes, it's an easy read and probably high interest. I just think there are better books out there for kids that fit the same criteria.

Book Review: Violet & Claire
Summary: 3 Stars

I picked up a copy of Violet & Claire at Barnes & Noble and as I was reading the back of the book, I thought, "Hmmm, this book sounds like it might be cool." It was my first Francesca Lia Block book and as I read it, I couldn't help but love her writing style. Everything is in so much detail and it makes the whole book seem a little like poetry. However, as much as I liked her writing, the book left me a little disappointed by the end.

I started reading the book, and really began to like it; about Violet and her movies, and then meeting Claire with her tinkerbell shirt and wings. Everything throughout the book describing Violet & Claire and their friendship was great, but I think all the other crazy things going on in between it were a little too confusing for me to follow sometimes.

Don't get me wrong, if you are a FLB fan, definatley read this. You will probably like it. But, don't buy it if you haven't tried any of Block's other books. I am thinking of getting the Dangerous Angels books b/c I hear that is her best work. I won't let my opinion of this book affect my opinion of FLB though, because she is a really good writer, and everyone should read something by her.

Book Review: Violet and Claire
Summary: 3 Stars

This book is about two girls named Violet and Claire who has these strange lives, but want to become writers. They dream about weird things and go places probably daring people would go. Both have their separate and different lives, though. They talk about each other's lives in the story. They aren't sisters, but they watch over each other like sisters. BR> I sort of liked the book and I sort of didn't like the book. The reason why I liked the book was because of all the fantasy dreams that they have and I was also interested in the cover. The cover is surprising when you look at it. I also liked it because the author talked about how they wanted to acheive their dream, but there was too many things going on that they couldn't keep up.The reason why I sort of didn't like the book was because it was a little too confusing. There was too much information at once. I read a paragraph for probably ten times and I still didn't understand it. Then I kept reading and I sort of got the hang of it.

Both have their separate and different lives, though. They talk about each other's lives in the story. They aren't sisters, but they watch over each other like sisters. Violet is kand of weird because she cuts herself with razor sharp knives to see what blood color she is. That's scary. Claire is not normal because she has wings and her real name is Tinkerbell. She is named Claire because so the people won't think she's weird and funny looking.
