Book Reviews of Voyager (Outlander)Book Review: Enjoyably Engrossing Summary: 5 Stars
Okay, for me this series started as a glorified romance novel, but has stretched into so many new directions, it would be a shame to simply classify it as such. More action/adventure than anything else, this third outing finds Claire eventually back in time with Jamie, climaxing in an adventure in the West Indies involving black magic, kidnapping, and murder. I thought it was great. And at over a thousand pages, that's a feat.
Book Review: Enjoyed as much as the others in the series Summary: 4 Stars
In Voyager Gabaldon continues the Outlander saga of 20th-century physician Claire Randall and 18th-century rebel Jamie Fraser. The book begins 20 years after the last book left off. Jamie is imprisoned, and once he's pardoned he buys a printing business. Believing that Jamie died at Culloden, Claire returns to her own century. She is reunited with her first husband and gives birth to a daughter, Brianna. When Claire's first husband's dies she takes Brianna to Scotland to introduce her to her true heritage. After some research they discover that Jamie survived the battle at Culloden. Claire decides she must find Jamie and once again steps through the stones on Craigh na Dun to find Jamie in Edinburgh in 1766. Once reunited Jamie and Claire want to lead a quiet life, but the kidnapping of Jamie's nephew throws the couple into a new pursuit.
I enjoyed Voyager as much as I enjoyed the other books in the Outlander Series. I've already started the Drums of Autumn the 4th book in the series.
Book Review: Escape to the Past Summary: 4 Stars
"Voyager" begins as an interesting 2-period time travel story, but develops primarily into a historical adventure novel. The novel does a good job of taking the reader to Scotland and the Caribbean of the late 1700's and of showcasing the author's knowledge of history and biology. She develops many great characters and scenes and tells the story with both passion and humor.
The time travel aspects which attracted me to the book focus on the possibility of doing historical research before traveling back in time to make sure conditions are right - in this case making sure a particular person survived a battle and lived on. It also focuses a bit on how/why/where time travel might work, though all this left me somewhat confused because of some associated witchcraft that I didn't care to hear about.
Being a middle book of a series, readers who only read this book will be slightly disadvantaged not knowing all that went before and left unsatisfied by what is more a pause than an ending. After spending over 1,000 pages seeking some resolution of the story, this was frustrating. Also, like so much modern fiction, it's a good story and a fun read, but lacks any purpose or message. It does provide many hours of great escape, which is what many readers seek. Another time travel adventure I truly enjoyed: ARROWS THROUGH TIME: A Time Travel Tale of Adventure, Courage, and Faith.

Book Review: Fantastic Fantasy Book Summary: 5 Stars
Voyager Terrific series by new author, starting with the incredible first book Outlander. She really creates her subjects and her knowledge of Scottish history is impeccable. A must read. At the moment the series has seven books. I'm only on the fourth, but I can't put these books down. A remarkable author and rewarding reads.
