A year ago,I read this book for extra credit. This book is super! The story tells mostly about Sal who tries to entain her grandparents by telling the story of Phoepe Winterbottom's story. While telling the story,Sal's story, which is almost the same, begins to unfold. The story is full of funniness, sorrow, and more to make it a very heart-warming story you will never forget.
Book Review: A Heartwarming Story to Use with Your Students Summary: 5 Stars
I loved this book! It has some great read-aloud parts because of the word choice of the text. The writing style is so pleasant and fun. I loved how great, fun vocabulary words were introduced in a context where children could understand them. The idea of coping with loss and being strong is introduced, but it is also shown that it is okay to miss people from time to time and to cry. The story also allows you to examine coping with loss from many points of view. The idea of subtext is introduced in the story and the duel storylines make me think of a lot of mapping projects. There are a lot of narrative and creative writing the can go along with the story. Also, there are connections to social studies with the geographical and Native American references. The story brings proverbs to life and talks about prejudgement and letting your imagination carry you away. Overall, a heartwarming story that also offers many opportunities for learning.
Book Review: A Journey for Everyone... Summary: 5 Stars
A Newbery Medal WinnerDo not be mistaken, this is not just a book for "children". Sal's journey with her grandparents is symbolic of the journey we all take through life, regardless of age. The humor, wit, and ease of communication displayed throughout this book are captured freely by author Sharon Creech. The poignant ending will make you read it again... and buy copies for all those you know.
