Book Reviews of Wanda Hickey's Night of Golden Memories: And Other Disasters

Book Review: Ralphie and Adolescent Angst
Summary: 5 Stars

Ah, Ralphie, like everyone, grows up. Only Ralphie does it in his own inimitable style. The keen observations of Shepherd on the bailiwicks of the pre-adolescent, trouble with cars and trouble with girls, the whole "growing up" wierdness, will keep you grinning when not outright laughing. Ralphie is everyman, who got there by being everyboy and everyteen. There is poignancy amongst the laughter, too, and the fiercely self-deprecatory pride at the grave situation of Christmas electrocution and the maternal care package. 5 stars!

Book Review: Read this book
Summary: 5 Stars

I read this book, handed to me as a must read! I thoroughly enjoyed ever page and the loud laughter it induced. The joy of the memories of my youth flooded back even being from a different era. Every one who was a child will enjoy the insights and memories rekindled by this book.

Book Review: Really nails lots of things..
Summary: 5 Stars

Girls from other towns are hot stuff, especially if they're Catholic and Polish, and you're not. A boy's great first love is his Ford. There's something for everyone at a county fair. When you get ready for a hot date, you're going to cut yourself shaving (whether you needed to or not) and there will be a giant zit where you don't want it. If you live in a town where there's a foundary or steel mill, you'll enjoy grey snow. The rich, knockout blonde will cut you and never even glance back, and the next time she sees you, she'll call you by the wrong name.

Jean Shepherd and Dan Wakefield both describe midwestern adolescence from the male perspective (from grade school to the draft board) better than anybody else I've run across, and Shepherd was there first. Interestingly, they both hale from Indiana.

I stumbled onto the Wanda Hickey story way back when it came out in Playboy, and I still enjoy reading it.

Book Review: Recomend this book to all ages
Summary: 4 Stars

This book was one of the funniest books I have read, the best part was how I was able to relate to the stories in the book. This book must be read, the humor of Jean Shepherd is one of a kind.

Book Review: Recommend This Book
Summary: 4 Stars

I think this book was really fun to read. The stories were told in a very interesting and humorous style. I especially like the story about prom because I could really relate to it. I could relate to a lot of the stories, and I think that's why I liked the book so much.
