Book Reviews of Wanted

Book Review: Astounding, but...
Summary: 4 Stars

First off - brilliant concept & execution on every front - the art, the story, the arc of the main characters, no complaints.

The choice to model three of the lead characters however, at least visually, to Eminem, Halle Barry and Tommy Lee Jones was incredibly distracting, especially when I despise Eminem. But perhaps it also aided in not liking these amoral psychos too much, lol.

There was quite a nod to "Fight Club" as well, that I was easy to forgive, but still, and again, distracting.

However, I digress - the strengths of this highly bold and daring project are so intense and raw, not many a publisher in the U.S. would even think for a second about attempting to back it - this would be like a Hollywood distributer breaking "Battle Royale" wide in a national U.S. re-release. The backlash would be ten-fold that of the "Natural Born Killers" fallout.

Top Cow definitely has the cajones of Paul Bunyon - kudos.

I just hope the movie adaptation coming out in 2008 isn't another "Punisher"/"Daredevil" farce.

Stick to the original material, make it a hard "R" rated affair (like "Sin City" and "300"), and enjoy the success that will follow.

Book Review: Better than the feature film
Summary: 4 Stars

Fair warning: this comic is quite a bit more graphic and major elements were changed for the motion picture.

This is a fine example of the book being better than the movie for 3 reasons. First off,the story delves way deeper into the comic book world. Unlike the film, there are several allusions to superheroes (including Superman) in this book. Second, the casting is way better - they use Eminem and Halle Berry lookalikes for the main characters and I must say I wish they were in the movie instead. Lastly, the writing is gritty, obscene at times, and passionate.

Book Review: Better than the movie
Summary: 5 Stars

Great and unusual storyline. Totally different and tremendously better than the movie version was.

Book Review: Boring.
Summary: 1 Stars

For better or worse, the book has very little in common with the film based on it. Don't expect a similar story to the movie.

I was excited to dig in to Wanted after glancing at some of the elaborate artwork, but was disappointed to find a lack of depth or anything actually interesting. When a book primarily aimed at exploring every carnal desire you could think of can actually be called boring, it's pretty clear that this is a book that misses the mark completely. No lesson is learned, no characters are developed, no point is made at all - Wanted feels more like a chore than a fun read.

Great artwork wasted on a weak story and boring characters.

Book Review: Cool and annoyingly pointless
Summary: 3 Stars

Artistically this is very well done; the art is some of the best I've ever seen in a comic medium. It also makes "Sin City" look like a clean comic/movie by comparison. I find it very unlikely the upcoming film adaptation will accurately reflect the grittier moments of this work; they just go too far for most film audiences to accept. I thought the ending was a bit lazy on the part of the authors. While it does fit with the story, I just don't like an ending the purposely goes out of its way to not make any substantial points. Then again expecting points from a story where characters have profanity for names might be a little too much. It was consistent with the rest of the comic, but it missed some great opportunities to make points and insights into life.
