Book Review: A Most Informative Book
Summary: 5 Stars
I highly recommend Nossov's book. It is very informative, given its comparatively small size. You will learn not only about the history of war elephants, but also about their equipment and armament, the size of the crews, the ways war elephants were used in battle and many other interesting details.
Although Nossov's book cannot be called strictly academic (in books of Osprey serials references are not permitted, with the exception of rare cases of direct quotations), it is based on a study of various sources. Nossov offers a number of suggestions (concerning towers and crews carried by war elephants) and reconstructs the image of war elephants in India (ancient and medieval), South-East Asia and Carthage, as well as of war elephants of Alexander's Successors. I know that artists working for Osprey books make coloured reconstruction exactly following the author's instructions, so all of it is Nossov's reconstruction. All the reconstruction in his book conforms with descriptions in sources and iconography.
