Book Review: Tough Air Force ground-pounders trading blows with Charlie!

Sandy Coker passed on his family's fortune to join the Air Force, and it wasn't too long before he ended up in Vietnam with RED HORSE, a new engineering unit being fielded for the first time. While doing his part, he is captured right before he is scheduled for R&R--and to be married--in Hawaii. Sandy is alive, but for how long?
Most people don't think of Air Force personnel as serving on the ground trading shots with the enemy, but this book will educate as well as entertain readers on that subject. Ronald Smith definitely writes from a "been there, done that" perspective, as he was a member of one of the first RED HORSE squadrons in Vietnam. He uses that experience to weave an interesting story with a myriad of characters, including Coker and his family, his fiancé and her family, and the many colorful characters Coker meets and serves with. The story feels very real, and I found that the camaraderie and dialog in the book very close to what I've experienced in my own military career. In addition, the combat sequences are particularly gripping, and the book also gives a bit of a history lesson on Air Force Civil Engineering and and how RED HORSE began.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, as in addition to being entertaining, it gave me insight into an area of the military I knew little about.
Overall, the book is presented very well. It has short, easy to read chapters, which allowed me to bite off the 462 pages at a leisurely pace, and an endnotes section to handle any confusing terms.
Fans of historical fiction painted on the backdrop of the Vietnam War will enjoy this book, as well as any Air Force Civil Engineering veterans.
