Book Review: The Symbol of Polish Statehood and Target of German Nazi Cultural Genocide
Summary: 5 Stars
Although this book is primarily in Polish, it also contains a many-page English summary. It traces the history of the Royal Castle from its inception through its early history, its complete and deliberate destruction by the Germans during WWII, and its belated rebuilding.
During the Germans' siege of Warsaw in 1939, they deliberately targeted the Royal Castle with bombs and shells, although it and the rest of the historic Stare Miasto (Old Town) hadn't the slightest military significance. Heroic efforts by Polish firefighters and civilian volunteers, many of whom perished during the German attacks, succeeded in localizing the fires to the clock tower and to the Bacciarelli Room.
No sooner had the Germans entered Warsaw than they sacked and vandalized the Castle. They then drilled numerous holes into the foundation walls and pillars for the emplacement of explosives and demolition of the entire castle. Photos of the holed foundations were smuggled out, and public opinion forced the Germans to postpone their barbarity. During the Warsaw Uprising, the Castle, together with the rest of the Stare Miasto, suffered extensive destruction. But after the Uprising, the Germans emplaced the explosives and blew up the Castle. A small fragment of the wall of the Zeromski Room was all that remained of the Royal Castle.
After the war, the Communists no more wanted this symbol of Polish nationhood to exist than did the Nazis. The Soviet stooges ruling Poland made all sorts of excuses for not rebuilding it, one of which was that "there was no money for it." (Funny how there was plenty of money for the lavish treatment of visiting Soviet dignitaries, etc.). Private collections were taken up all over the world (including among Chicago's Polonia, as I well remember) to make the rebuilding possible. Not until 30 years after WWII was the Royal Castle finally rebuilt.
