Book Reviews of Wartime

Book Review: Solidly comprehensive and a great read to boot
Summary: 4 Stars

This is among the best (and certainly it is among the most comprehensive) of all the social history books ever written about the British experience of the Second World War. The greatest attack upon the British isles in centuries, World War II fundamentally changed the lives of every person in the United Kingdom even before a single shot was fired given the massive mobilization of the public in the early days. Gardiner takes you through all of the stages of the war: the immediate prelude, the Phony War, the Blitzes of 1940 and 1941, the V-2 flying bomb attacks, and all the stages in-between and afterward. Her chapters (which unfortunately are not always labeled as clearly as you might like) concern themselves with each of these episodes in the war, and also to many of the great social changes of the war: the rationing, the blackouts, the mobilization of women, the effects of the American GIs brought to Britain, the families torn apart by the stationing of men overseas and of children rusticated to the countryside for their own protection. The book is enormous, and incredibly comprehensive; Gardiner draws from letters and journals (particularly the famous wartime diaries of Vere Hodgson) and novels and short stories (notably by Elizabeth Bowen, Graham Greene and Marghanita Laski) as well as from historical archives. There is sometimes almost too much information to process, but the result is quite readable and comprehensive, with an emphasis in particular on the experience of the middle-class women left behind while their husbands, fathers and sons fought overseas.
