Book Reviews of Watchers

Book Review: A storyline that promises big and delivers big
Summary: 5 Stars

Though I do not include Dean Koonz among my favorite authors I have chosen to read "Watchers" since it was listed as a "must read" in a list compiled by fellow thriller authors and also had a good rating by readers from Amazon

Travis Cornell, a depressed loner having leisure in the mountains meets by chance a golden retriever who seems to have an IQ that exceeds the intelligence of a dog, from that on his life takes a sudden turn when he decides to become the master of this dog, he named Einstein. At the same time it seems that Einstein was part of a top secret research performed by the US government, which is desperately looking for the dog that run away from the laboratory where it was kept

All researchers of this project are also murdered. Travis life is at risk, he will never return his beloved smart dog

Characters, emotions and events are so freshly and realistic described that in some chapters seem to pop out of the pages. A hybrid monster, a rapist, a woman suffering from anxiety disorders, and an ambitious murderer for hire add spice to this relentless story that never loses zest from beginning to end

A one of a kind tale, the favorite of the author according to his impressive afterword (he said "..I wondered If would I ever write another book that was as personally satisfying to me as this one had been...)

Book Review: A thrilling and futuristic look at the importance of strong family ties
Summary: 5 Stars

It's a dangerous and lonely world out there, especially if you have no one on which to rely for companionship and love. You have to seize opportunities and take risks it seems, to be able to find your way to effectively cope through this life on planet earth, and this great story provides a way for us to understand that on several very personal levels and to expand our perception of what being "sentient" means. It also gives us a contemporary and thought-provoking glimpse at the potential and dangers of producing chimeras (mixing cells of different organisms) through biological research.

In Watchers, you get to explore the exhilaration when loving souls come together through three main characters: a man, a woman, and a very special dog. They all have had something very important that's been missing in their lives, and through some harrowing and action-packed synchronistic circumstances they bond and begin their newfound lives. But there is something in their future that can unsettle and unhinge their newly formed family roots and possibly destroy them - something unpredictable and evil - and they must look within themselves and to each other to face the challenge.

Along the way, readers will see some elements of international espionage, organized crime, biological warfare, and domestic terrorism, knitted into a tightly-bound, exciting, and ultimately, a family story.

I find myself still thinking about the characters and what they endured in Watchers; how they opened their minds and hearts to forge a better understanding of one another. And I also keep pondering the possibilities and consequences of making animals more human-like. This story gives us just a glimpse of what may turn out to be a great many more unexpected results.

Book Review: A very good novel, but not one of his ABSOLUTE best ...
Summary: 4 Stars

There has too be a cutoff, if "Intensity, Hideaway, and Lightning" novels are 5 stars in my opinion, then "Watchers" is a 4 star.

Book Review: A wonderful and imaginative tale
Summary: 5 Stars

I was in a book store and happened upon 'Watchers'. I had read it more than a decade ago. I had always treasured the book and had passed it on to many people. I thought I'd post a review just to praise Koontz and his ability to create two characters that are as memorable as any I have ever read.

The incredible part about this book is that the two characters I mentioned above are not human. The genetically engineered and lovable dog, "Einstein", and the scientific monstrosity known as the "Outsider" steal the show. It is one of the few occasions where two fictional imaginations bridge the razor thin barrier between human emotion and animal instinct. I have read many of Koontz's novels but I am hard pressed to chose one that has a more indelible impact.

I don't want to give away any spoilers or say any more about the two supporting actors that grab the spotlight. I must comment on the book's conclusion which is one of a handful that has stayed with me over the course of a few decades. Underpinning the emotional and stirring conclusion is the question of why do we aim to kill, destroy, or otherwise overtake what we sometimes envy? Even beyond that question is the enigmatic and omnipresent scientific implications that keep the pages turning. Koontz has always been adept at suspending disbelief and 'Watchers' is one of a select few tales that is vibrantly real and impossible to ignore.

I can't recommend this book strongly enough.
