Book Reviews of Watchers

Book Review: A word of caution... not enjoyable for all
Summary: 2 Stars

After hearing such strong praise for Watchers, I decided it would be a perfect book for a horror fan like myself. Sadly, I found the suspense dull, and the characters felt superficial to the point of cartoonishness. This surprised me, since Koontz's Phantoms is one of my favorite horror novels. If you have read a fair amount of horror, you will find the frightening moments so predictable they lose all intensity. The character psychology and emotional maturity remain at consistently low levels. Scientific explanations? Fascinating mysteries? Nope, sorry... none of that fun stuff here.

Book Review: Absolutely Awesome
Summary: 5 Stars

This has to be one of the top 5 books I have read. A unique concept, a great adventure, great underlying themes, it has it all. You cheer for the characters, and it has a very satisfying conclusion. I am a dog lover and have a Golden Retriever, and I don't know if I will ever look at her the same again. This book was truly exciting and touching at the same time.

Book Review: An All Time Favorite
Summary: 5 Stars

The government has been doing genetic alterations: a lovable intelligent dog and a violent monster of some sort. They both escape and of course the government wants them found and destroyed.

You will fall in love with the characters, Travis, Nora and Einstein, the lovable mutt. You'll even feel something for the "Outsider".
This story has everything, love, compassion, intrigue and suspense.
You don't want to miss this.

Book Review: An Interesting Read that Becomes Hokey
Summary: 3 Stars

Reading Watchers was like riding a rocket into space. The initial excelleration and high speed toward the unknown must be such a rush, but once you are floating in an expanse of far-out existance, there is only disappointment. Maybe that is a bad analogy, but Watchers had taken me in for the first 300 pages. I kept thinking this was one of the better novels I read in a while. Einstein's character, however, becomes hokey and too caricatureishly unbelieveable toward the end. The villans are erased too abrubtly, and plot devices are predicatble and dead-ended (i.e. Stark, overdone foreshadowing with Vince). The novel is an interesting read that did keep me captivated, but something about the plot and its chracters just falls short and seems cheap at times. There is a nice homage to Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, but it does not seem to work here. Watchers has the potential for more depth but refuses to go there. After reading several of Koontz's novels, I am steering away to more in-depth, problematic examples of the genre.

Book Review: An excellent book.
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of the absolute best books I have read by Dean Koontz. I really enjoyed it. I couldn't put it down! You get hooked right away. I will definitely read this book again. Highly recommended. I wish I could give this book 10 stars!
