Book Review: Nice to have... but...
Summary: 3 Stars
This is a nice book to have, but, there are some concerns.
While this book does give us a peek into the evolution of our favorite spudboys into the band we all love, it does so with a less than reliable approach. There are numerous quoted passages in the book without citation or reference, and there are anecdotes, while interesting, that are presented with no support as to their veracity. It is easy to read this book and wonder who said what, in what context, and to whom and why.
The other major problem with this book is the narrative. In its weak moments, the book reads like a hoary old article from "Creem" magazine, and in its even weaker moments it reads like it was written by someone who is a self-appointed Guardian of Truth in one of those old usenet forums. This "I have the inside story and you don't" tone gets tiresome very quickly, since it doesn't come off as wry as much as insecure and obsequious. Additionally, the narrative often lumbers between whimsical and maudlin, leaving the reader a curious taste in their mouth for accuracy of information.
I found the points regarding the literary foundations of the band's ideology quite interesting and the book has me searching feverishly for the works of Oscar Kiss Maerth and B.H. Shadduck, Ph.D.
This book is for any and all devo fans; others might be only mildly amused.
