Book Reviews of WeaveworldBook Review: Weaveworld leaves a lasting impression Summary: 5 Stars
Quite simply the best book Ive read for a long time. When people describe books as a 'page turner', I sometimes dont agree but this IS a page turner. The story is so fast paced you never want to put it down just to see where the story goes next. The world that is woven into the carpet sometimes feels like the story embedded in this book, its addictive, deep and draws you in. Easy to keep track of the characters unlike some books, and the locations sometimes seem similar to places youve been to. Thouroughly recommend this book to those who want good fantasy fiction!
Book Review: Will keep you up at night...try to find a previous edition Summary: 5 Stars
There's a frightening picture in the 1980s edition of this book I found in my grandmother's boxes of books. My grandfather was always the fantasy type...and so am I. The picture is as rich and detailed as this book. Visit The Shrine of the Mortalities, marvel at the female power of the Menstruum, and help a London bloke make sense of life as reality unravels and knits up again and again. The cuckoo is a metaphor that turns up in Neil Gaiman's A DOLL'S HOUSE and Clive Barker did a forward for one of Gaiman's SANDMAN oeuvres.
Book Review: Worth it for the ending Summary: 4 Stars
I read Weaveworld in high school and loved it. I thought I'd pick it up and read it again. Honestly, 3/4 of the way through this book I wasn't too impressed. I had it rated at 3 stars. The first part of the book is a little slow to develop. Not that there wasn't any action, just that there are relatively few major plot developments and I was patiently waiting for something big to happen.
The last 1/4 was so good, however, that I considered giving this book 5 stars. I think the ending was why I liked it so much when I read it the first time. Once the Scourge enters the scene, the plot thickens and the action picks up. I won't give away anything, but the ending is very satisfying. It culminates in a moral that will touch every fantasy fan deeply.
The world and themes Barker creates are unique and impressive. It took a lot of imagination to pull this off. I just can't give Weaveworld 5 stars, but it's definitely a good read and I would recommend it to all fantasy readers.
Book Review: Wow Summary: 5 Stars
I read this book when it first came out and all I can say is WoW! The idea behind this book is so far fetched I'm suprised I even read it. The beauty of it is you believe the whole story and can picture yourself in the story! Clive and Peter did a wonderful job with this book. I haven't read it in years but plan on purchasing again because it was that good.
Book Review: obsesses a bit too much over sex but just as good as his children's stuff Summary: 4 Stars
This book is hands down one of the best of Barker's more adult books. I picked it up as a first edition hardcover without a dust jacket at an old used book store. When brought it up to the register the shop owner-who has managed to read every book in his store-looked at the spine, say Clive Barker's name, and gave me that look people visitors to my church give me; that mixture of caution, and question.
Well I've read some of Barker's other stuff, and I thought most of the "Adult" stuff was contrived, and adolescent. That all changed when i read the first Chapter of Weaveworld.
The book revolves around a group of characters drawn together by a magic carpet-not the kind that fly- whose very threads are actually a world shrunken down and woven together in an attempt to hide from a vicious monster. Two of the character's, a women charged with guarding the mystical tapestry, and a man taking advice from a long dead relative-a mad artist- decide to protect the carpet, while the other two, the king of con-men and a monster so evil she strangled her sisters in the room, set out to destroy the carpet one way or the other.
There's horror, a little immature romance, a little more tame approach to sexuality then most of Barker's work, and best of all, the integration of solid supernatural fantasy set in the real world.
If you're looking into giving Barker's work a nibble this is a great place to start.
