Book Review: 50 years later, and still magical

If I could, I'd give this book a ten star rating. I first read The Pink Motel in the 3d grade on summer vacation in California at my grandparents' house. It was my mom's original pink hardcover from the Weekly Reader's Club, and had been her absolute favorite book growing up. It also became my instant favorite, and 26 years later it's in a special place on my bookshelf. I still read this book at least once a year at the start of every summer, and recently shared this book with my 10-year-old niece, who loved it as well. It's an enchanting story with a humorous, quirky ensemble of characters, an exotic location and an exciting mystery. The characters and surroundings are so vividly described that you almost feel as though you're there on a tropical beach in Florida in the midst of the adventure with Kirby, Bitsy and all the rest. The story also contains a subtle message of looking beyond the superficial and accepting people for who they are, and that the most wonderful people and events can come into your life in the most unexpected ways. Highly recommended for kids, and kids-at-heart!
