Book Reviews of What Dreams May Come: A Novel

Book Review: A solid work of spiritual fiction.
Summary: 3 Stars

I really wanted to like this book more than I did. I love the spiritual genre. Celestine Prophecy, Illusions, and Way of the Peaceful Warrior are some of my favorite titles. But I never did get emotionally involved in the story. I share Matheson's vision of heaven and hell so the book turned out to be more validation rather than revelation for me. I also have never had anyone close to me die, yet. Perhaps a re-read is in order when that time comes.

Book Review: Fantastic
Summary: 5 Stars

A friend lent me this book about ten years ago. I was floored then and rushed out to buy it, only to find it was no longer in print. It's one of those rare gems that should be on everyone's shelf. The movie got the visuals right, but there wasn't a single reference to "Summerland," only to the tired versions of heaven and hell. The scriptwriter made some significant changes to the book, some that improved the story, and others that definitely didn't. Kudos to Matheson for writing the story. It's a winner.

Book Review: Interesting framework for the story, very weak motivations
Summary: 3 Stars

I read the "What Dreams May Come" book after I saw the Movie version. I am happy to say that the Movie version of the story was much much stronger, more consise, interesting and a better all around story from a story telling point of view than the book by far. The Characters in the book have extremely weak motivations for actions that in the movie are much more stronger and more beliveable. The Imagry in the book is very limited, especially for the fact it is talking about something infinatly large in scope such as Heaven and Hell. The framework that the book was written with was very inovative seeing as it was written 19 years before the movie was made, but still, the Character development was bad.

Unfortunately, without mentioning details to spoil the movie experience or the book experience, there was not one major action taken by a character that had a beliveable motivation attached to it. There were no "forevers" anywhere in the story, which makes it difficult for a character to make a decision that can affect his soul forever if he chooses to help someone who is not in peril forever, "just wait awhile and everything would be fine" seems like a more logical choice.

I read the story, but I was not compelled to do anything but see the movie again, or wish the movie version was written into a book so I could read it instead.

Book Review: This book can really be compared to any of shakesperers wor.
Summary: 5 Stars

This book can relly be compared to one of shakesper's works. Like Hamlet this book tells a compelling story of struggel and hope. Masterepice is the word I would use to dicribe such a compelling story.

Book Review: unique!
Summary: 5 Stars

Is the kind of book that you love forever.
