Book Review: 3 1/2 stars is about right...
Summary: 3 Stars
Yes, this book is loosely based around the whole Brangelina debacle, as so many others have pointed out. Although I do think SEP tried to mix it up a little by making Georgie (the heroine) look more like a Julia Roberts type, with the wide mouth and sort-of irregular features that somehow come together to work for her. Jennifer Aniston is beautiful and not funny-faced at all! Bram (the hero) seems more like Brad Pitt than did Lance (the loser ex.) But Jade (the woman Lance left Georgie for) was a dead ringer for Angelina Jolie! And Paul (Georgie's controlling father and manager) pretty much WAS Richard Gere. Once the author tells you that he looks like him, you can't picture anyone else.
That being said, the reason I have to knock the 1 1/2 stars off the rating is because for some undefined reason SEP's typical formula didn't work very well for these characters. She has become so formulaic that it gave this book the feel of being regurgitated old material, right down to the gratuitous gay best friend. (There! I think I just defined it!) I just wish she'd come up with something we haven't seen before! I guess she wants to stick with what works. I can't argue the fact that she's struck gold with this same formula many times. (i.e. Nobody's Baby but Mine, and pretty much all the Chicago Stars/Bonner Brothers books.) It just didn't play well this time! Some felt Bram got annoying, but for me, it was Georgie. She was constantly reverting back to her role as Skooter to get her through various situations, and her need to see Bram as the same old person he had been eight years ago, when it was as plain as the rubber-band mouth on her face that he wasn't, got old fast. The conflict went on too long and was wrapped-up too quickly. Still, there were moments of greatness in this book. I found myself reading avidly in places, and in others, being able to put it down for extended periods. I also got what I've come to expect from SEP. I laughed in places, teared-up at times, and smiled at the extremely sweet happy ending. (Almost a little to saccharine for my tastes, but typical of this author.)
The secondary characters were what kept this book moving along! They were far more interesting than the main ones! We revisited quite a few characters from previous books and were also introduced to a number of new ones, whom, I suspect, we'll be seeing in future books. Some reviewers felt that she was heavy-handed with the love scenes. I actually felt she rushed and skimmed through them too much. She had good build-up but then kind-of fizzled out. She didn't get too graphic or crude, as so many others do these days. I just don't want people to not read it on that basis. If you weren't offended by her other books I doubt you will be by this one. All in all this wasn't a bad read if your looking for a light summer romp. If you wait for it in paperback I think you'll have gotten you money's worth!
