Book Reviews of What's So Funny?

Book Review: 2nd Last Dortmunder Novel, Fiction World is a Lesser Place Without Westlake
Summary: 5 Stars

With the death of comic caper grandmaster Donald E Westlake in 2008 the world lost probably the greatest comedy crime caper writer of all time. What's So Funny? was the second last Dortmunder novel written before Westlake passed away (Get Real was the final adventure). Maybe not the greatest of all time Dortmunder novel, What's So Funny? is still a member of the forget about whatever else is going on, keep reading until the final page fun reads.

In What's So Funny? Dortmunder notices an undercover cop in a booth at the OJ Bar and Grill. Dortmunder had been all set to meet up with his usual accomplices in the back room to hear about an opportunity one of them had come across. When the undercover catches his eye and indicates he should take the seat opposite him Dortmunder knows nothing good can come from this. Turns out the cop is not a cop anymore but starting out his own private investigator business. He has a client who needs the services of a man with Dortmunder's skills for planning heists. He also has some photos of Dortmunder in the act stealing goods and will pass these onto his ex workmates if Dortmunder doesn't steal what his client wants. Later Dortmunder will find out the client (a man in a wheel chair with a head resembling a medicine ball named Mr Hemlow) wants a heavy chess set made of gold and jewels that was stolen from his relatives (who had stolen it from some Russians during World War I) back in his possession. Unfortunately this chess set is in a vault under a building where even the lift taking people down is guarded by security guards. Dortmunder wouldn't even waste his time thinking about a caper set to fail like this one but if he refuses to do it he'll be going to jail anyway.

If you haven't read the other Dortmunder novels you don't need to have done so to understand or enjoy this one. However a greater knowledge of Dortmunder and the other criminals in his gang from reading the prior adventures will allow you to appreciate and enjoy little things that go wrong or interactions between them to a better extent.
