Book Reviews of What to Expect the First Year, Second EdBook Review: Very informative in an easy to digest format. Summary: 5 StarsNow at the end of my first year with our son I have used this book loads, but particularly in the first 6 months when I was soaking up baby info like a sponge! I really liked the style and format - as well as the wry sense of humour of the authors - easy to digest, seemed to cover 95% of the queries I have had and the one book I dipped into regularly through out the year.I thought the info on various milestone/stages of baby development uncannily accurate and the emphasis on pointing out the variations in timescales for different children as being completely normal reassuring. I had no problem with it being a US/UK book - just adjust your thinking where necessary. The breast feeding alternatives definitely helped save my sanity when breastfeeding wasn't working for me and I was getting virtually no help to discuss options from health visitors (who have been excellent in all matters apart from this!) Have just ordered the Toddler Years follow up!
Book Review: One of the best babycare books in print! Summary: 5 StarsI thought this book was brilliant. Having just had my first baby and not knowing anything about bringing her up, I found this book invaluable. It covers everything, and the questions posed throughout were almost exactly the questions I wanted answered. It gives you confidence that you are doing the right thing, that other babies do the same things and that there isn't a problem! The only thing I would say against this book is that at the beginning of each monthly chapter it spells out what your baby should be doing by the end of that month, and what it possibly may be able to do. if my baby isn't doing that then I feel she is 'behind'. But outside of that it is a great book and one every new parent should have.
Book Review: Excellent reference and advice book. Summary: 5 StarsMy mother sent me this book from America, so I have the American version. I presume it has been adapted for the UK market as the What to Expect When You Are Expecting book was. Although we are only into the second month, this book has been a great help, answering many questions I have and giving a lot of reassurance and guidance. I will recommend it to my friends!
Book Review: Answers everything you wanted to know Summary: 5 Starsas with the first book in this title, this book explains everything you need to know about your babies first year even those questions you felt silly asking your health visitor. This book is a must for first time parents. The sections are split up month by month and in these chapters are information on what your baby may be doing and not what she should be doing (there is no pressure to conform like other baby books and definetly no lecturing) it also covers every illness possible and how to treat them.
Book Review: A great reference book for new Mums - so glad I got it Summary: 5 StarsI have just had my first baby and found this book excellent. As a new Mum I found I was inundated with well meaning advice but found it extremely useful to have a book which discusses all the options and gives a very balanced view and what so far has been sound advice. I found myself reading and re-reading sections which you can't do with advice you get from your health visitor and you can't always remember all the detail first time round. It is laid out month by month suggesting progress your baby may be making at each stage, but I felt under no pressure whatsoever for my baby to be 'fitting in'. The question and answer structure is great and I found it easy to find the subjects I was interested in in the index at the back.
