Good, clear explanations of all the strange things that new babies do in the first year; their physical and emotional changes, what they should be doing at the nth month. I've read a lot of different 'first year' books, all of which have their merits, but this is the only one that I consistently refer back to. The month-by-month chapters always seem to deal with exactly the issues I'm curious about as my baby reaches each new stage; so I tend to read ahead a couple of chapters each month, then flick back through the book when I have a specific problem or question. The tone of the book is factual, but it also gives great, non-judgmental guidance, advice and, most importantly, reassurance. It is clear that the authors are writing from experience rather than just quoting the latest theory, and I feel it most closely matches my own instincts and values about childcare. The book is also extremely comprehensive - it really does seem to provide an answer to everything you could think of asking (and to lots of things you didn't even realise you might need to know!). My only criticism would be the lack of more creative ideas about weaning. This being the case, I would recommend using it in conjunction with (for example) one of Annabel Karmel's baby and toddler cookbooks.
Other than that, I highly recommend it to all new parents, and I'm sure it will come in handy the second or third time round too. I'm now looking forward to The Toddler Years...
Book Review: Slightly annyoing

As a first time mom I found this book a valuable and quick reference for all sorts of questions. It only gets four stars from me, however, due to the slightly annoying patronizing style. Everything is presented as The Truth, while in fact some issues do leave a lot of room for discussion, e.g. vaccinations. I didn't care much for the constant we-are-so-witty-attitude either. Still, a good source for the new parent.Book Review: If you one buy one book during the first year buy this one

This is like the bible of advice for the first year. Unbiased information regarding what to expect developmentally , what baby should be able to do each month, but also what they might be able to do & what they might possibly manage. Deals with issues and questions in the relevant month they are likely to occur & has some helpful sections about illnesses & the like. You will refer to it again & again whither a new parent or a parent of many. If you only buy one book regarding your child during the first year then this should definately be it!
