This book was a revelation. I expected another typical high school romance - fun to read, but a little unrealistic. Instead, When It Happens tells a story that is refreshingly real, honest and wonderful.
As Sara starts her senior year, she's determined to find real love - what she craves is not just a relationship, but a relationship with someone who understands her. She hopes that someone is Dave, a boy she has been crushing on all summer, and she's thrilled when he asks her out on the first day of school. But as Sara fits herself into the mold of 'Dave's girlfriend,' she begins to realize that he's not at all the kind of boy she imagined he was.
Tobey has known Sara since elementary school, but he hadn't talked to her in years until he had art class with her in the spring of their junior year. Over the summer, Tobey thinks about Sara, believing that she might be his 'something real.'
This story of searching for and finding what just might be true love (and of the work it takes to make true love last) is told in chapters that alternate between Sara and Tobey's points of view. That the author is able to give both teens genuine voices and complete, complex characters says a great deal about her skill and lends a tremendous amount to this honest, real-life tale of romance.
