Book Review: A fast yet depthless novel...
Summary: 3 Stars
This one most definitely had hit and miss views for me. Patterson created a story that was interesting and captivating, leaving me thinking about the book when I wasn't reading it. This is most assuredly a good sign. That being said once I did finish it I was left not really thinking about it anymore, not caring really too much about it. This was a first for me, to look forward to reading something everyday and then to not really care about the book once I was done with it. Strange indeed.
Part of it has to do with Patterson's writing, actually most of it does. He definitely writes page turners. With each chapter only a few pages long it is easy to get through a chapter and want to start another one. This creates the effect that you are on the seat of your pants, the edge of your seat, waiting to see what happens next. I kind of liked this. This is very similar to other mainstream writers such as Dan Brown, so nothing new here. Where Patterson differed though is that his writing is a very surface level writing. There isn't much depth to anything in this book. So on the one hand it is a page turner that makes you want to keep reading, and on the other hand there isn't anything really deep enough to really involve the reader.
So this was most certainly a hit and miss for me. I looked forward to reading this book every day, but when I was done I didn't really care too much about the book. Interesting. I will give the sequel to this a go around though, The Lake House, just to see how the story ends. I know it will captivate my interest and will be some light reading, but sometimes that is all a person needs in between some of the more depth filled novels.
