This book has something for almost everyone. The story in the book is extremely well written. It is a book that grabs the reader. Most people will not be able to put the book down. They will fly through the chapters in record time.
This book is like several books rolled up into one. This book is like a travel book, a history book, a bible commentary, and a book about current political events in the middle east. If you think about it or after reading the book you can understand how that is possible. In many ways all of those areas are very interrelated. The book shows that in amazing detail.
The best part of the book is how he offers a new look at the bible. His insight on the bible with the information from the other disciplines makes the bible come alive. All readers will look at the bible in a new light. He takes the primarily old testament theology and puts it under a new light with his writing style. This new style makes it come alive like it just occurred yesterday. His rich descriptions of the land and its people in vivid detail makes you feel that you are there with him.
Feiler has some great insight on specific chapters. His commentary laced with modern history shows how specific events of the bible did actually happen. For example he shows how some chapters of the bible took place in Iran. That is something I never quite realized. According to his book there is a small Jewish population there that can trace it's heritage back to the time of Daniel in 536 BC or so. That is just one example of how the bible still shapes events today.
After reading the book and see the interlinks in the disciplines you can better understand the middle east. The vividness of the history overlaid with current events to a point where it is one is just how the people in the middle east see their land. That is how they can see our present actions as just another crusade.
No matter your preferences I think you will love this book.
