Book Reviews of Where the Williwaw Blows: The Aleutian Islands-World War II

Book Review: Good if your ancestors were there in 1944-5
Summary: 2 Stars

This book would be mildly interesting if your grandfather had been stationed in the Aleutians during 1944-5. You would learn about the conditions under which he worked. My grandfather was a Commander in the Naval Air Force and he was stationed in Umnak in 1942. It was quite dangerous then, the Japanese had conquered two of the Aleutians, and there was a fierce battle to oust them. My grandpa said there was one tree on the entire island, and it wasn't very big. He had to sleep with a gun under his pillow in case the Japanese sneaked ashore. He was transferred out in 1943 and continued elsewhere in Naval Air Intelligence, spying on the Japanese. By the time Leonard Feinbergr was there, the action had moved elsewhere, the Japanese were retreating, and things in the Aleutians were very, very quiet. Their biggest enemy was boredom.

This book has no plot. It has a variety of characters, some of whom are mildly interesting. The rest are too stereotyped.

This is not a book you would read because of its thrilling plot, its interesting description of the Aleutians, its in-depth analysis of geopolitics or Naval strategy, or its finely drawn characters. You would have no reason to read it unless you were trying to find out the conditions under which your ancestor was working in the years 1944-5 in the Aleutians.
