Book Review: WHITE HUNTER

This book has 277 pages, first written in 1938, has no maps but 16 B/W photos and further 7 B/W photos on the dust wrapper. J A hunter was born in Dumfries, Scotland in 1887 and went to Kenya in 1908. He became a white hunter and married Hilda Bunbury in 1918. In 1958 he built Hunters Lodge at Makindu, Kenya, where he died in 1963. This book has 25 chapters.
The Author leaves Nairobi with a friend to hunt elephants. They trap 3 leopards and shot elephants with 80lb tusks. Now they were in Kisii country. They natives south of Lake Victoria love elephant meat. After killing, the elephants cover their victims with branches of trees. They may even pull natives from trees and kill them. Speed of infuriated elephants can be 20 mph. Their normal trakking speed is 10 mph. They get alarmed after hearing 2nd and 3rd rifle shots. Elephants cemeteries do not exist. Elephants cannot jump.
Rickets is common in lion cubs due to eating meat while too young to digest it. WHEN THE LIONS ROAR, IT IS A WONDERFULLY AWE INSPIRING SOUND, THE VERY GROUND SEEMS TO TREMBLE. The flesh of lion or leopard to a hyaena is like candy to a child. Church yards have stones "Died from lion wounds". Man who has been mauled say that the lion just shakes you as a dog does a rat. Look of a mosquito net, frail it is, is a deterrent against lions. The speed of charging lion is exceptional. The claws of lions and leopards are piosoned with particles of decomposed meat and blood. If there is anything unpleasant in Africa, it is walking in the dark. Lions have contempt for the car, so long as they do not see mankind's legs.
When a buffalo is wounded, he charges, only his death will save you. Buffalo meat is coarse and tough. Rhino at its worse gets through thorn bushes with ease. On occasions elephants give way to rhinos. Hippo can stay under water for upto 10 mts and has the widest mouth in the animal kingdom. The leopard is silent and fearless, and beautiful especially the heavily dark spotted variety. A dog is favourite meal for a leopard. Beasts look larger to human eye at night. Leopard makes " quicker than eye can follow" charges. Cheetah very rarely charge and have claws similar to the dog.
Crocodiles " what they grip, they hold". Using mosquito nets, not only keep mosquitoes out, but all other creepy crawlies. The secretary bird kills snakes using its long legs and wing feathers.
The last chapters deal with poaching, care, safety, usage and cleaning of different calibre of rifles and the african natives helping the european on safari and hunting. As with many old books, some of the written is irrelavant ,now a days.
Hunter writes well. The book is easy to read and keeps you interested. Having born in Kenya, I enjoyed reading the book. Read his other books 'hunter', 'hunter's tracks', and 'tales of the african frontier'(african bush adventures).
