Janet Fitch is truly a gifted writer, vividly painting her story with words. Without being at all flowery, she incorporates incredible use of figurative language and all five senses into her work so that the story comes alive and you feel that you are actually living amongst the cast of characters. Periodically one must pinch themselves to remember that this is infact a work of fiction.
Astrid spends her teen years growing up in several foster homes. Her myriad of experiences are told in such a clever way that you can actually observe this young character maturing. Whether Astrid is visiting her mother, Ingrid, in prison or not, you feel the intense bond between mother and daughter. Ingrid's personality is clearly intelligent, powerful, and snake-like.
The writing is phenomenal, gripping, sharp, artistic... The book has left a mark on me. It is story I will not soon forget and one that I will highly recommend.
