Book Reviews of White OleanderBook Review: Better the Second Time Summary: 5 Stars
I read White Oleander twice. The first time I really appreciated the insight Fitch seemed to have into the minds of foster kids. After the movie came out, I read it again, and was impressed as much by the poetry in her writing. I highly recommend it. I'd also suggest it as a good choice for mature teens. Book Review: Can sleep I am reading this amazing book Summary: 5 Stars
One of the best books I have read recently, this is not your normal coming of age story. When Astrids mother is sentenced to life in prison for murder, Astrid is thrown into a world of foster care. The story is rich as you find yourself rooting for Astrid to find the one thing she always wanted a home.
Book Review: Couldn't put it down. Summary: 4 Stars
I loved this book. The characters in it are bizarre but still mostly believable. I think she did a great job at keeping them up and it's somewhat sickening to know that people like this exist, which makes you want to read on.
I will agree with other critics, however, in a few ways. The ending was not the greatest. It kind of felt like she was tired of writing and kind of slapped on the easiest finish. The majority of the book, however, kept me wanting more. She did not shy away from shocking situations.
Second, the characters do sometimes falter in personality which I alluded to before (especially the mother), but I think that it's also somewhat practical, especially since the situations in this book were extreme. Overall I don't think it takes away.
Third, it is ridiculous that so many of these things could happen to one girl. But seeing such a tough personality grow was exciting and each of the situations were well written.
I would not hesistate recommending this book to anyone. It is different from a lot of things you will pick up which was very refreshing.
Book Review: Excellent novel Summary: 5 Stars
This book is a real thought-provoker and if you've ever seen the movie this is about ten times better
Book Review: Fabulous! Summary: 4 Stars
This book is gorgeous. Yes, Fitch exaggerates foster care and makes Ingrid a monster and Astrid a tolerant victim, but I really liked the stories and lessons in it. For being a third generation American, Fitch's grammar comes across as funky to me, but her lyrical writing style sure makes up for it. The movie doesn't compare.
