Book Review: 2.5 Stars...Never Printed for a Reason

A long-time Mark Twain fan, I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book. I anticipated flashes of his inimitable humor, wit, and keen eye for the human condition. Thankfully, I saved myself some money and picked up a copy from the library.
"Who is Mark Twain?" gives few answers to that question, instead offering up some unpublished articles and lectures from his estate. There is little here to give us deeper insight to Twain's thoughts or personality, and in fact many of the unfinished stories come to such abrupt endings that I was left dissatisfied on more than one occasion. The promise of such concepts as "Conversations with Satan," lead only to long dissertations on cigars and German stoves, doing little to fulfill my expectations. There are a few nice moments, dealing with postal rates and Congressional idiocy, but overall the episodes lack impact.
If you, too, are a Twain fan, you may feel it necessary to explore these short stories, and you'll certainly find a few of his characteristic moments of candor and insight. Overall, though, I'm inclined to say pass on this one and go back and read one of his published works again. There's a reason most of these took so long to be put into print, and it's hard not to be (in a Twain-like manner) somewhat cynical about the motives behind releasing this thin collection at a hardcover price.
