What James Brady has done is created an anthology of Marine history where through a series of vignettes we learn what makes a Marine a warrior. He creates this history by enlisting many former Marines to tell their story of what motivated them to enlist and more over what motivated them to fight when others would have ran. So what makes Marines fight? When you combine constant training with hard fisted discipline, you forge a warrior who is willing to give it all for his fellow Marine who is shoulder to shoulder with him. Marine training with its discipline creates a bond of loyalty between Marines which is not equaled by other branches of the Armed Forces.
This work falls short in that there are too many vignettes of Korean War Marines and nothing of Marines fighting the Global War On Terror. That being said, the reader learns about some very famous Marines and some famous individuals who were great Marines.
