Book Reviews of Wild Fire

Book Review: "A Cautionary Tale for a Post 9/11 World"
Summary: 4 Stars

Wild Fire taps into the idea of nuclear jockeying for position. That theme tugged at my conscience as DeMille's callous covey of leaders set out to retaliate for 9/11. DeMille calls this "a cautionary tale for a post 9/11 world."

DeMille is a master of suspense, and this one falls under the category of political thriller. A corrupt group of people, some who hold top-level jobs in business and government come together at a hunting lodge, but they're not setting up blinds for Bambi's mother. The world as we know it will change for the worse unless the Anti-Terrorist Task Force can stop their plan. Enter Corey and Kate with a little help from the locals. DeMille suggests on the cover flap that he created his plot based on Internet rumors that a government plan like Wild Fire exists. Not a happy thought. The Anti-Terrorist Task Force in the John Corey novels is based on the Joint Terrorist Task Force. This, coupled with DeMille's knowledge about ELF and NEST and governmental procedures makes the plot believable. And yes, according to DeMille, bearbangers are real.

For anyone who hasn't met John Corey, the knight on the white horse in DeMille's thrillers, Corey says and does what the real law people wish they could. He's a veteran NY cop, a vigilante, and general troublemaker with no sense of chivalry whatsoever, except when it comes to his wife and his country. He curses, he breaks the law and does the opposite of what he's told to do, but he always gets the job done. His wife, Kate, a lawyer and anti-terrorist team co-worker, sometimes acts as his conscience but most times goes along for the ride. She represents the genteel side of kick butt and take names. In this thriller, DeMille lets John Corey and Kate wait in the wings a little too long while the callous covey sets up their prey in the meeting from hell, 70 pages long. Still John Corey does not disappoint, and the last 30 pages keep the reader on the edge of his or her seat.

In the scheme of all DeMille's novels, Charm School is still my favorite with Lionsgate and Nightfall, my most recent favorites. Nightfall is tighter in pacing than Wild Fire. It's the richness of DeMille's settings, his characters, and the startling research that keep me waiting for the next DeMille novel.

If you like Bruce Willis-type characters and riveting suspense, you'll appreciate DeMille's John Corey from Lionsgate to Nightfall to Wild Fire.
