Book Reviews of Wild Fire

Book Review: A quick, but sophomoric read
Summary: 2 Stars

I really like Nelson Demille's older works such as Cathedral and the Generals Daughter. I don't like the John Corey character and especially the banter that he uses when speaking with other characters. I hated Night Fall and I hated this one.

Book Review: A very disappointing read - not up to Mr. Demille's usual standards.
Summary: 1 Stars

Nelson Demille is surely capable of better stuff than this! After about the hundredth inane wisecrack from the obnoxious Detective John Corey, I found myself hoping the evil Bain Madox would succeed with his nefarious scheme just so Corey would get his well-deserved comeuppance. The real mystery in the book is how Kate Mayfield, Corey's wife and a not particularly believable FBI special agent, puts up with Corey's insufferable behavior. Corey jumps to conclusions without any supporting evidence, bullies and belittles almost everyone he encounters, thumbs his nose at his superiors and other law enforcement professionals, and Mayfield, supposedly his boss, simply whines and goes along with his unprofessional and misanthropic antics. Fortunately for those two, the villain is accommodating and has an incompetent security staff, so they are able to blunder their way toward the predictable conclusion. The bulk of Corey's dialogue with the suave Mr. Madox tediously consists of the same expletive, used over and over. Hopefully, Mr. Demille will retire the irritating Detective Corey and come up with a more engaging character for his next book. I'm glad I got this one from the library...

Book Review: A very good book.

I read this on the beach in Mexico and loved every minute of it.

Book Review: AMAZING!
Summary: 5 Stars

After I read all previous novels featuring John Corey, I could not wait for this book to come out. And I definetely was not disappointed! I could not put it down until the last page. Highly recommend!

Book Review: Abysmal!
Summary: 1 Stars

OK, you've got some idea of the plot from some of the other comments. Well here's a novel twist - the baddies are a right wing clique comprised of the usual collection of generals, senior government guys, half the CIA, shadowy businessmen.Has this ever been done before? Chief baddie is ...wait for it...a WASP owner of an oil company. Gasp! The audacity! It doesn't say so in the book but we can probably assume he is also a Bush fundraiser and shoots polar bears out of season. These evil geniuses helpfully explain their plan to a captured FBI guy (why?) a la James Bond. This isn't a good move on DEmille's part as their reasoning is flimsy to put it mildly.
Now for our hero, John Corey who is partnered with his wife. Fortunately they live in a world where law enforcement agencies evidently think that husband wife partners is a really good idea. Corey blazes new territory in fiction. He is a street cop, a maverick, uses gut feel, gets results, hard talking, wise cracking. This has never been done before....wait...never mind. He is obnoxious to virtually everyone he meets, all are foils to his razor wit. Of course everyone else in law enforcement are incompetent "suits" and it goes without saying that he and his wife are light years ahead of the combined forces of US law enforcement. It also goes without saying that he is on his own - he is his own man, pushes the envelope, a maverick etc.Have you got the picture now? In case you haven't you will be reminded several times per page. If he is given an order he does the opposite, swears freely at his boss and proceeds to run rings law enforcement guys and right winger plotters alike. Oh and he only has two days to unravel this dastardly plot whilst evading his colleagues using only his own resources.
Everything about this book screams lazy writing. It is however one of those rare books where you hope against hope that our hero is killed off, horribly.
