Book Review: "Come on in. Have somethin' to eat. Stay all night."

I've had this book on my pile to read for a few months;and just never seemed to get to it.Well,having just seen "Walk The Line" (see my review November 27,2005);I just had to get at it.The movie was just as much about June Carter as Johnny Cash ,so I thought this book would be an interesting follow-up to the movie.I was not disappointed.This book details the lives of all the Carters and shows what they derived their strength from.
I have been an devoted Country Music fan since 1950,so this book brought back many musical memories.As much as I have followed this music and these artists,there are many things that hit me as total surprises.Just to name a few;
The closeness of their relationship with Hank and Minnie Snow,both on a personal and professional level.The whole impact of Sara and Con;The influences and personalities of Eck and JP;that Elvis worshipped Anita;The closeness and concern with Hank Williams;and all the trials and tribulations of making a living in the music world.I was aware of the ups and downs in this lifestyle,but never realized how much the bottom would fall out when new styles came in such as Pop, ROCK and ROLL,Folk,Nashville Sound,and the Country Rock we are seeing today.
This book does a super job of covering everything from the people themselves,their family life and connections,life on the road,the publishing and recording and overall business side,;but through it all you can see the foundation of Country Music comes from the soul of these people.
A couple of little things;Keep some paper handy to make notes about the geneology of the Carters,it'll help with keeping them
sorted out.Another point,I always keep an Atlas handy ,and just couldn't figure why I couldn't find Maces Springs on any map.Finally on page 329 I got my answer."In 1959 Maces Springs was no longer recognized as a town by the state of Virginia,or the Rand Mcally mapmakers"
The book is loaded with mountain talk,wisdom and expressions.A
coupl of my favourites were;
"you can't fiddle if you don't pat your foot."
and
"It's getting so you can't afford to die."
But this one says it all;
"It's a hard life,but when a man's got music in his bones,he's
got to get it out."
The book is a bit detailed in the beginning,but stick with it.It gets better the further you get into it;and as you reach the end ,you'll wish it would keep on going.It's a wonderful read and packed with information.
