Book Review: Beautiful But Incomplete

The book has some rather impressive photos, and the book also offers some very practical advice about entertaining. There are great pictures of plates and glassware. I was very puzzled, though, by the lack of recipes. For each of the parties (i.e., birthday tea, poolside party, winegrower's picnic), the author provides a recommended menu. The catch is that there are no recipes for these menus. I just found that a bit odd and also feel it makes the book incomplete. For example, he suggests the following menu for a family gathering: cornish crab bisque, roast fillet of beef, millefeuille with lemon cream, baked alaska with rhubarb compote. For those who have no clue how to make these dishes, you are stuck with great suggestions and no way to implement them. I suppose you can search the Internet for some of the recipes, but it would have been great to have them all printed in the book as they surely would have been tested and re-tested before printing. If I had to sum up the book, I'd say it's a fairly decent collection of tableware photos with some good anectdotes provided by the author here and there. I'm not so sure that's worth the $40.00 price tag.
