This is one of the best biographies ever written about one of America's sports legends . . . . Willie Mays. Author James Hirsch skillfully covers Mr. Mays' career as well as his personal life (at least insofar as he was able to cover it, as Mr. Mays is somewhat reclusive). Although Hirsch's earlier career was that of a journalist (New York Times, Wall Street Journal), his writing style employed here is closer to that of a novelist, painting a fascinating portrait of Mr. Mays.
The book covers Mr. Mays start in the Negro Leagues, specifically the Birmingham Barons, and continues with his career with the New York and San Francisco Giants, and finishes with his two years on the New York Mets club. But the story goes deeper as Hirsch interweaves Mr. Mays' years in baseball with events that changed racial equality in the U.S. It also cites numerous examples of Mr. Mays' work with the youth of those cities in which he played.
Although the book will probably appeal to sports fans, particularly those fans of Willie Mays, almost anyone will find this an enjoyable read. James Hirsch has knocked the ball out of the park with an in-depth biography of Willie Mays and easily earns my five star rating.
