Book Review: Actually not all that great a book

I was truly a dummy when it came to wine at the time I read this book. Unfortunately, Wine for Dummies was not very enlightening. Its problems:
- It meanders all over the place. Where to begin? The book makes no suggestions for where to start your education, instead just providing scads of information about all the possible varietals and regions you might be interested in.
- It makes very little attempt to simplify wine for the beginner. The problem I have with this is that wine is already needlessly complex and a "Dummies" book that doesn't simplify it misses the point.
- It feels very pro-European and traditional when it comes to wine. The problem is that Europe is the most complicated wine area, with regions and subregions and crus and villages and wine grapes not named on the label, so it makes almost no sense as a framework with which to begin understanding wine (although there's nothing wrong with European wines).
- It doesn't adequately teach concepts like "dry", "crisp", "body", "oaky", etc.
- It doesn't suggest potential tastings
Basically it's just a big book full of wine knowledge.
A far, far better beginner's book is "Great Wine Made Simple" by Andrea Robinson. "Great Wine Made Simple" is not only much more fun (it involves lots of tastings) but it teaches the concepts you need to know much better. Have a look.
