Book Review: Not all bad but...
Summary: 3 Stars
A beautiful young monk finds his hometown terrorised by three fire demons so he seeks out the winter demon to help him, however the winter demon wronged him in the past.
To begin, this book contains three non-Japanese manga stories, the main one of which is "Winter Demon". Winter Demon revolves around the relationship between the monk and winter demon mentioned above, and how the winter demon comes to realise the error of his ways when he is raped by one of the fire demons. The story itself is a little dull, the monk, the main uke of the story, is not particularly interesting to look at despite being supposedly beautiful, and his personality is fairly bland, making him pretty forgettable. The winter demon has a fairly attractive design but he too falls short of becoming a memorable character as the whole storyline revolves around the realisation of how badly he has treated the monk, which is a conclusion he comes to very quickly and with very little development, when it could have made a very powerful and emotional scene. The sex scenes themselves are (of course yaoi) non-explicit and far from erotic. They just don't seem realistic. The main story is, however, not a complete loss as the three fire demons are all fairly interesting and it is a pity they were not the focus of the story. In fact, the development of the relationship between the master and servant (Ratsu and Jin I believe) fire demon is far more intriguing then that of the winter demon and the monk, and it seems a shame for Ratsu and Jin to even have a developing relationship when the fire demons, save for Jin, meet such an abrupt and seemingly pointless end. The art throughout this story, is not terrible but nothing special.
The second story is related to Winter Demon though it does not have the same characters. The art is a lot more professional and resembles the style found in a lot of Korean manwha comics. It is based around a man considered stupid and unattractive by his clan finding love with an incubus demon. The sex scenes are closer to the explicit and manage to be erotic this time, however the story is too short for you to really gain any love for the characters.
The final story is badly drawn and has an utterly forgettable storyline. When one character tells another they are "as pretty as a woman" it seems slightly redundant with such terrible art.
All in all it's not a total waste of time to read "Winter Demon" but there is a lot of lost potential here.
