Book Review: Laughing Matters

Vaishali's former book called 'You are What You Love: There is Only the One, There is Always Infinite Abundance: There Is Only the One, There Is Always Infinite Abundance' made a big impact on me and basically shifted the way I think quite dramatically. Wisdom Rising is formatted a little differently and to great effect. This book comes in the form of short bite size chapters on a myriad of subjects. The chapters don't have to be read in order, basically this book gives you spiritual food for the mind no matter how much time you have. Although I read this book at home in two days, it makes for a great travel companion where you can squeeze in a chapter or two whenever you are on the road.
As witnessed in Vaishali's radioshow and her former book, she writes with both candor, humor and depth. I think this is so pivotal for books on this subject, because Spirituality is meant to be lighthearted and fun, contrary to common practice. It's no wonder that Vaishali finds spiritual nutrition in comedians like Bill Hicks and Lenny Bruce. (There is a section on spiritual stand up teachers on page 99, one my favs)
There are in total 40 chapters on a diversity of subjects and each of them is like sitting down with the author and having one of those fun, memorable conversations that you will remember for life. The subjects that stuck most in my mind were actually about her own experiences (she recovered after having been diagnosed terminal twice among many other traumatic things of which most people don't experience a tenth of throughout a whole life time.) She doesn't emphasize her past experiences all too much, but they truly left me profoundly in awe.
Other standouts for me were the segments on Oscar Wilde and a different kind of navel gazing that has me thinking about breathing in an entirely different way. She also touches briefly on the Law Of Attraction and adds the depth most people found missing after watching the popularised way of thinking as seen in the Secret.
I know have two of Vaishali's books always laying around my house, always picking them up and reading a couple of pages. Her first one is starting to show serious signs of overuse and I know Wisdom Rising will suffer the same fate as well.
