Book Reviews of Wisdom of Our Fathers: Lessons and Letters from Daughters and SonsBook Review: A great collection! Summary: 5 StarsNormally "sequels" especially collections from readers are rarely this good. Tim's first book was a heart warming chronicle of fatherhood and he follows it with a beutifully edited collection of stories detailing hundreds of fatherly relationships. Makes a great lunch time book as one can read a few excerpts and put it down. Find your favorite tale and share it with your child or father. An excellent book!
Book Review: Tim Russert Summary: 5 StarsTim Russert has always been a favorite of mine and "Wisdom of Our Fathers" didn't disappoint me. It was a perfect Father's Day gift for my son-in-law.
Book Review: Ignores the Reality for Millions of Abused Children Summary: 1 StarsTim Russert's book ignores the horrors millions of us faced at the hands of violently abusive fathers. Only by experiencing an abusive childhood can you even begin to understand what it's like to have your whole life shaped by the terrors of living under the iron fist of a Godless father.
For far too long in America have the horrors of child abuse been ignored in favor of the 1950's, "Leave It to Beaver" impression of father-child relationships. We all want the fantasy of a father who loves us and cares for us. But, for those of us who never knew that, the only thing we carry from our childhoods are nightmares that can never be erased.
I know that Tim Russert wants to sell a lot of books. I know he wants to have a book franchise like Tom Brokaw did with "The Greatest Generation." But, Mr. Russert has a good deal of power with American audiences. He could use that to also acknowledge those who have suffered abusive childhoods. Also, he could donate a small percentage of proceeds from his books to an organization such as Prevent Child Abuse America.
Book Review: Great read Summary: 5 StarsThis was a wonderful book. It made me think of the times with my Dad (and Mom) that I took for granted and now deeply miss. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
Book Review: Inspiring Summary: 5 StarsAfter receiving an avalanche of e-mails and letters about "Big Russ and Me," Tim Russert couldn't resist writing "Wisdom of Our Fathers." Both books share a firm commitment to honoring fathers of "the greatest generation." They may not have parented the way "yuppie parents" parent, but they certainly touched the hearts and souls of their sons and daughters. Those who consider the book "sappy" likely haven't read it or simply hold a not-so-hidden disdain for Russert for political reasons. The varying vignettes are touching but not sappy. They honestly share stories about imperfect men who were imperfect fathers, yet who were real men and real dads. We all have much to learn about fathering from them.
Reviewer: Bob Kellemen is the author of "Soul Physicians," "Spiritual Friends," and "Beyond the Suffering" (which honors African American founding fathers and mothers).
