This is a beautiful copy of a story I enjoyed when I was a child and wanted to share with my own children. The story of a young outcast who is taken under the wing of the local "wise woman" or witch, where she learns to appreciate that she is different. I discovered this book when I was about 13 and I still count it among my favourites! The characters are portraits of complexity and depth, and the plot is engaging. The fantastical elements present aren't over-the-top given that they are surrealistic in style, and I believe that they are meant to be more symbolical than anything else.
More significantly though, the author weaves some quite profound notions about life and community through these pages. In fact, I remember this book as being the one that first truly got me thinking "outside the box" as compared to my peers in my Catholic school setting.
Really a good read for shifting perspectives and laying the groundwork for openness and acceptance in life.
