Book Reviews of Wise Child

Book Review: I thought this a wonderful book
Summary: 5 Stars

Wise Child is a very endearing book. In it, Wise Child- the main charecture- loses her last remaining family and is "sold" to Juniper, who everyone thinks is a witch. During her time with Juniper, Wise Child learns many things, not just mathematics and english, but the wonderful things in the world and how to embrace all things. I'm not saying this book is all mushy and the "we must love all things" kind of book, but it really teaches you to see the best in others and in other living things. It does lack some detail, you really have to use your imagintation more... although I never mind doing so, but it does make it harder to see things the same way Ms. Furlong does.
It is a wonderful read, I can only say it is one of the most wonderful and insightful books I have ever read. And that's saying a lot.

Book Review: Buy This Book
Summary: 5 Stars

I read this book when I was about twelve I think and I loved it. I could not put it down. I have distinct memories of bringin it to school with me and setting it on the corner of my desk so that I could pick it up and read a little more in any spare moment that I had. It captivated me. And it's a fascinating story. Even now, I pick it up and reread it from time to time and it has lost nothing over the years. So buy it. Buy it now. You will love it.
And for all those reviewers who are worried about the pagan overtones or historical inaccuracies: get over it. The book is fiction. Fiction. Let's all remember that lest we have to start debating the historical merit of every book that comes out.

Book Review: I don't like reading, and I loved reading this book...
Summary: 5 Stars

When I was younger, I hated reading, I wasn't slow at it--I just didn't like it. But I absolutely loved this book. It is, to this day, still my favorite book, and I'm a young adult now. I highly recommend this book to anyone of any age just interested in a good read to take them back to those imaginative times of youth.

Book Review: The Best Book Ever!!!!!!!!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Wise Child is the best book I have read yet so far. Even though I have not finished it yet I know that it is absolutly brilliant. This book takes your mind on a journy. This book is actually so fasinating I have a tough time putting it down to I watch T.V. (And that's saying something)

Book Review: Good fiction but NOT history!
Summary: 4 Stars

I really love Monica Furlong's books, both Juniper and Wise Child. But her fantasy world is NOT the historical one. It has ties to early Ireland (before Christianity fully took hold), and so if it were historical it would be set before 1000 A.D. But Furlong introduces a witch-hunting inquisitor; the inquisition in the real world was only started in 1213, well after Christanity had taken over in Ireland. By the time that the witch-accusations start to be part of church activity (in the 1400s) no-one in Britain was admitting to the Old Religion. There are other touches that indicate that Furlong's fantasy world is not historical, but only the ones dealing with inter-religious conflicts are truly troubling-- because they may lead young people to have a inaccurate and possibly prejudiced view of the history of religion. (No, I'm not a Christian...)
Anyway, the book itself is a great fantasy and I love it. It should just not be read as resembling real history.
